Van Woerkom’s design for his own studio house has an inimitable clarity. He harked back to experiments by the De Stijl group. Rectangular planes in primary colours on the facade mark the points of the compass. The structure’s columns, floors and stairs are explicitly visible, devoid of concealing cladding, and there is little privacy for the inhabitants. Here the architect is thrown back upon his work, his family life and his surroundings. In this house the division between private and public is removed. What remains is elementary space to live in.
